The electric car space in India is heating up, and Mahindra has finally dropped something that isn’t just playing catch-up — it’s playing bold. Meet the Mahindra BE 6, a futuristic electric SUV that not only looks like it’s landed from another planet but also feels like it. I got the chance to spend some time with it, and trust me, this one’s not your usual EV story.

The BE 6 at First Glance: “Be Sexy” Indeed

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s just appreciate how radical this thing looks. Designed by Pratap Bose — yes, the man had full creative freedom here — the BE 6e is what happens when a coupe, a spaceship, and an SUV walk into a bar.

Up front, you’re greeted by a sleek LED signature that screams futuristic. The bonnet is split, with a top half that looks almost like a spoiler, and somehow it all works beautifully — both in form and function (hello, aerodynamics!). There’s even a 45-litre frunk, which is a neat bonus.

From the side, the coupe-crossover stance is unmistakable — long wheelbase, big arches, tucked-away door handles, and that sloping roofline that gives it a silhouette unlike anything else in Mahindra’s garage. Move to the back and the drama continues with flashy spoilers and a new Mahindra Electric logo. Oh, and there’s a party trick: a ‘Groove Me’ light sync function that literally turns your car into a disco. Yup, this one’s built for the bold.

Inside the Cockpit: Aircraft Vibes, All the Way

Step inside and things get even wilder. The entire cabin is inspired by aircraft design — and no, that’s not just a marketing gimmick. The gear lever looks like a plane’s thrust control, the central console feels premium, and even the key is spaceship-inspired (complete with its own “landing pad”). It’s the little things, right?

The dual 12.3-inch screens take care of infotainment and driver info, and everything from the climate controls to seat ventilation is baked into the screen. While it looks super clean, I personally missed physical buttons — adjusting AC settings while driving isn’t the easiest task.

Another cool touch? The moonroof with embedded light motifs — it’s less car, more lounge at night. Rear passengers get their fair share of love too, with Type-C ports, an armrest, and a spacious feel (though the roofline makes getting in slightly tricky).

Powertrain, Platform & Range: Built Electric from the Ground Up

The BE 6 rides on Mahindra’s all-new INGLO platform, which means it’s designed as an EV from scratch — no more ICE conversions here.

There are two battery pack options:

  • 59kWh with 682km claimed range
  • 79kWh with 535km claimed range

Yes, that’s not a typo. The smaller battery offers more range because it’s likely paired with a lighter powertrain setup. Both setups drive the rear wheels (yay, RWD!) and offer zippy performance — 170kW (~228hp) and 210kW (~281hp), both making 380Nm of torque.

Add to that a semi-active suspension and variable-ratio steering, and the BE 6e starts sounding a lot more premium than its price might suggest.

Driving the BE 6: An EV With Soul

Once behind the wheel, you get the sense that this SUV is made for people who love driving. Acceleration is instant and exciting. Whether you’re cruising in “Everyday” mode or punching it in “Boost,” the Mahindra BE 6 feels alive.

What impressed me most was how planted the SUV felt at high speeds. We touched an indicated 202kmph, and the Mahindra BE 6 remained composed and solid. Around corners, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering adapts beautifully to your speed — light when parking, heavier and more connected on highways.

The ride is firm, no doubt, but it finds a sweet spot between sportiness and comfort. Oh, and did I mention it can park itself? Yes, auto-park works with or without you inside the car — just press the button on the key fob and watch the magic.

Verdict: A Game-Changer for Indian EVs?

The Mahindra BE 6 is not just Mahindra catching up — it’s Mahindra leapfrogging the competition. It’s fresh, it’s fast, and it’s futuristic. Sure, the sloping roof makes getting in a little awkward and some may miss physical controls, but these are nitpicks in an otherwise standout package.

With a starting price of ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the BE 6 is easily one of the most exciting EVs to hit Indian roads in recent times. If this is the future of Mahindra Electric, then I’m all in.

What do you think about Mahindra’s bold new move into the EV space? Would you consider the BE 6 over a Nexon EV or ZS EV? Let’s chat in the comments!
